Qantas the Sequel: The re re re re retweet

Qantas Social Media #Fail

Qantas Social Media #Fail

The grounding of the Qantas fleet on the 29th October was a PR disaster for Qantas of the grandest scale! Today, Qantas tried to beat their record negative sentiment, and succeeded! But is it all negative? Could this be a clever campaign to link Qantas and Luxury? Could the laughs at their expense turn some of that negative sentiment around?

In case you missed it (and are not as obsessed with social media as we are!) here is a recap. Earlier today Qantas launched a competition on Twitter asking followers to be clever in their responses to the following question “What is your dream luxury inflight experience?”

The initial call out

The initial call out

The first mistake was to offer pyjamas as the prize. Initial criticism was about the prize and its lack of creativity or appeal. It didn’t take long however, for the avalanche of very clever and very funny responses to start. Unlike the last backlash – this one has a sense of humour and could actually be the best thing for Qantas right now.

The best thing about this supposed #Fail is that Qantas have taken the lighthearted approach also, having a bit of a dig themselves. Maybe some lessons were learned after the last disaster. (see below for update of latest post – very clever!)

What do you think? Clever PR campaign? Bad timing? Or just another social media disaster for Qantas?

Here is the review (VIDEO) of the last social media disaster for Qantas.

Addition: Here is a post posted after this blog was written. This kind of tone and approach will only get them good publicity!
