Blending Ancient Wisdom with Modern AI: A Conversation with Rachel Zinman

Updated: Sep 17

In a recent episode of The AI Grapple, I had the pleasure of chatting with Rachel Zinman, a yoga teacher, musician, and author who is exploring the intersection of ancient practices and modern technology, particularly the potential of artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance traditional wisdom. Our conversation provided some practical insights into how AI can be used in a meaningful way, especially for small businesses and creative professionals.

Finding Balance Between Tradition and Technology

Rachel's journey started in the world of yoga, where she has spent years teaching and mentoring other yoga teachers. She noticed a common challenge: how difficult it can be for these teachers to market themselves effectively. Many struggle with finding the right words or creating the right content to promote their classes on platforms like Instagram and Facebook. This is where AI comes in as a useful tool.

Rachel found that AI tools, such as ChatGPT, can help generate ideas and content, making the task of marketing much easier. For example, if a yoga teacher has a rough idea of what they want to communicate but isn’t quite sure how to phrase it, AI can provide a starting point or even refine the messaging to better fit their audience. This allows yoga teachers to focus more on their teaching and less on the daunting task of digital marketing.

Keeping the Human Touch in AI Interactions

One of the most interesting parts of our discussion was about keeping the human element in our interactions with AI. Rachel talked about how she uses AI as a tool to help brainstorm and refine ideas, but always with a human touch. For her, it’s important to approach AI like a collaborator – someone who helps out, rather than a replacement for human creativity.

We also discussed an experiment Rachel ran where she used AI to create a poem for a meditation community. The poem received positive feedback until people found out it was generated by AI, at which point their perception shifted. This experiment highlighted the importance of authenticity and transparency in how we use AI tools. It’s a reminder that while AI can be incredibly helpful, it’s still important to be open about how it’s being used.

Navigating AI in Creative Fields

As a musician, Rachel has also been exploring how AI fits into the creative arts. She shared her experience using AI to generate music and visual art, noting that while the technology can quickly produce results, it often lacks the emotional depth that comes from a human creator. For example, Rachel tried using AI to separate music tracks, but found that the AI-generated output didn’t have the same feel as a live recording. This experience led her to see AI as a tool that can help with brainstorming and idea generation, but not as a replacement for the unique qualities of human artistry.

Using AI Thoughtfully in Business

Throughout our conversation, Rachel emphasised the need to use AI thoughtfully, especially in business. She suggested that AI can be a fantastic tool for tasks like creating content strategies or generating marketing materials. However, it’s important to use these tools in a way that enhances, rather than replaces, the human element. For small business owners and creatives, this means using AI to handle some of the more routine tasks, freeing up time to focus on the parts of the business that require a personal touch.

We also discussed how AI could change the way people find services, such as yoga classes, in the future. AI has the potential to make searching for services more intuitive and personalised, but it’s still important to maintain personal connections and genuine interactions.

Staying Grounded in an AI-Driven World

Towards the end of our conversation, I asked Rachel how we can stay grounded as humans in a world increasingly influenced by AI. She offered some thoughtful advice: remember that AI is just a tool, and we are the ones in control. It’s up to us to decide when to use these tools and when to step back and engage in real-life, human experiences. Whether it’s through practising yoga, creating art, or simply spending time with loved ones, we need to make sure that technology serves us, not the other way around.

Rachel’s insights were a great reminder that while AI offers many opportunities, we must use it in a way that aligns with our values and keeps us connected to what truly matters. If you're interested in exploring how to integrate AI into your own business or creative practice, start with small steps and always keep the human element in mind.
